A beautiful synergy between Chiropractic and Naturopathy

Chelsea Costa, NaturopathBy Chelsey Costa

Growing up, I came from a very conventionally minded family when it came to health and medicine. If we were sick, we would go to the doctor and often end up on antibiotics. After moving to Australia from South Africa, my eldest sister Kelly started studying chiropractic.

I truly believe this is where everything changed for my family and myself. Soon, we were introduced to the premise that the body could heal itself! An initially mind-blowing thought, now this premise forms the basis of my chosen life path, naturopathy.

Kelly was a CA at Cottesloe Chiropractic Centre at the time and I remember her coming home with olive leaf and Echinacea tinctures for when we were sick. At first, I thought this was crazy. However, her journey sparked a change in our minds about how the body should be treated when you are unwell.

Along with dietary changes such as removing sugar and processed foods, our philosophy about health dramatically began to shift. Instead of relying in medication for every illness, we were turning to natural solutions and chiropractic management to allow our body to do what it has been designed to do, heal itself. This truly changed everything!

Fast forward a few years, when I was faced with the decision of what to study- a large part of me was drawn to study chiropractic and follow in my sister’s footsteps. It was difficult to turn down, but I was then introduced to naturopathy and I could feel that this was the path I was meant to go down, and so I followed my gut.

Now many years later, as a qualified naturopath I see more than ever the ability of the body to heal itself with naturopathy, chiropractic and other natural modalities like kinesiology to stimulate the body’s innate intelligence or vital force. To treat someone as a whole person, means to take into account, the physical, emotional/mental and the chemical and this is where naturopath and chiropractic work so beautifully together.

Naturopathic philosophy is underpinned by the following principles:

1) The healing power of nature

There is an inherent ability of the body to heal itself and there is also the ability of nature itself to help heal us. This includes spending time in nature, eating fresh unadulterated foods, herbs and fresh water to stimulate the body’s vitality. Looking after your nervous system with chiropractic care, helps the body to function optimally and allows it to heal itself.

2) Treat the whole person

This principle encourages us to look at the whole person from a physical, chemical emotional, mental and spiritual point of view.

3) Treat the cause

Rather than providing symptomatic relief or a “Band-Aid” approach, a naturopath’s goal is to identify the underlying cause of a health issue and address the cause so that true healing can occur.

4) First do no harm

This involves applying more gentle changes like improving your diet and exercising as fundamentals before implementing stronger therapies.

5) Prevention

Prevention is certainly better than cure. This involves identifying future issues a patient may face due to family history or genetics and implementing changes early on to reduce the likelihood of these issues occurring in the future. Improving your diet, exercising regularly, reducing stress levels as much as possible and getting regularly adjusted are all great ways to start ensuring you are preventing health issues down the line.

6) Patient education

I believe this is one of the most important principles because if a patient is not educated to understand what is going on and what changes need to be made for a sustainable health journey, then it will be difficult to overcome their health issue. I educate my patients so they are in control of their health, rather than relying on medicine (natural or conventional) for the rest of their lives.

There is truly a synergy or symbolic relationship between naturopathy and chiropractic.

As someone who regularly gets adjusted, I feel first-hand the powerful effects of chiropractic to help my body to function optimally. I value the changes chiropractic has brought myself and my patients.
